Four of the most respected names in European Jazz/Improvised music take to the stage at Fringe Jazz. British Saxophone colossus Paul Dunmall brings his main quartet to the club for the first time, featuring the superb pianist Liam Noble, and Paul's regular trio collaborators  John Edwards on bass and Mark Sanders on drums. Although Paul has been a regular performer at Fringe Jazz since the club first started we've never been able to book his 'main' band because our old venue did not have a 'real' piano so after all these years we are very excited to be welcoming the quartet to The Bristol Music Club. This is going to be a very special gig.

PAUL DUNMALL - widely recognised as one of the most talented reed players on the International jazz/improvised music scene. Whether playing in small groups or big bands his musical sensitivity and imagination combined with a powerful sound drenched in both Jazz and Folk traditions make him one of the most distinctive improvisers playing today.

He has performed with Alice Coltrane, Rashied Ali, Hamid Drake, Andrew Cyrille, Henry Grimes, Elton Dean, Evan Parker, Alan Skidmore, Keith Tippett, Mujician, Johnny Guitar Watson, Danny Thompson, LJCO, Chris Corsano, Paul Rogers, Andy Sheppard, Spirit Level and many more...

“A robust and heavy hitting performer who has gone on to concentrate largely on free improvisation without sacrificing a rigorous melodic logic, a sparing lyricism and the technique to drop in on bebop occasionally.” – John Fordham, The Guardian

Noble has recorded and released several albums through Basho Records, including the acclaimed ‘Close your Eyes’ (1994), ‘In the Meantime’ (2001), ‘Romance Among the Fishes’ (2004), and ‘The Madness of Crows’ (2011), as well as collaborating with various notable musicians such as Stan Sulzmann, Julian Siegal, Paul Dunmall, Christine Tobin, Marc Ducret, and Okkyung Lee.
