The multi award winning contemporary pianist Matthew Bourne brings his trio to Fringe Jazz for the first time with the brilliant Riaan Vosloo on Double Bass and the exceptional Dave Smith on Drums.
MATTHEW BOURNE is a dynamic and forceful pianist and composer who draws from jazz traditions and the worlds of pop, classical, and electronic music.
Described in the Observer as "The future sound of jazz" Bourne has released several critically acclaimed albums on the Leaf Label including Montauk Variations (The Sunday Times’ Leftfield Album of the Year in 2012) and Moogmemory (2016) and has taken part in a number of notable collaborations with artists and groups such as John Zorn, Annette Peacock, Marc Ribot, Paul Dunmall, Barre Phillips, Nils Frahm, Nostalgia 77 (with Riaan Vosloo), Broadway Project, and Amon Tobin.
Bourne was a long-standing admirer of the late Bristol born pianist and composer Keith Tippett – in fact, he is quoted as saying that “Keith Tippett is the reason I play piano the way I do”. In 2019 he teamed up with Tippett to perform a series of duos, which would prove to be Keith’s last performance project. A recording of that duo project has just been released called 'Aeolian' a double CD set of both studio and concert performances on Discus Music.
RIAAN VOSLOO - the multi-talented bassist, composer, arranger, educator and producer needs little introduction to the regular Fringe Jazz audience. Riaan has worked with Matthew Bourne on number of projects over the years including Vosloo's popular and critically acclaimed Nostalgia 77.
DAVE SMITH is best known for his work with Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters, Afro-Blues group Juju and as co-leader of afro-dub Fofoulah. He is also a member of the critically acclaimed Cloudmaker Trio with Jim Hart and Michael Janisch.
